Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be good at art?

No — genuinely. Art therapy is about expression, not skill. Many clients haven't picked up a crayon since childhood. Whatever you make is welcome; there's no judgement and no standard to meet.

What happens in a first session?

The first session is mostly about getting comfortable: we talk about what brings you, what you'd like from therapy, and any questions you have. For children, the first meeting is usually with a parent or caregiver. There's no pressure to make anything before you're ready.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in sessions — including the artwork itself — is treated as strictly confidential, within the standard ethical limits that apply to all registered health professionals (such as risk of serious harm). Your artwork is stored safely and is never shown to anyone without your consent.

How long is a session, and how often?

Sessions are typically around 60 minutes. Most clients come weekly, especially at the start; some move to fortnightly as things settle. We'll agree a rhythm that fits your needs.

What does it cost, and does medical aid cover it?

Please get in touch for current session fees. As an HPCSA-registered practitioner with a practice number, invoices can be submitted to medical aid schemes; reimbursement depends on your scheme and plan, so it's worth checking with them directly.

Online or in person — which is better?

Both work well; it depends on you. In-person sessions offer a dedicated space and a wider range of materials. Online sessions offer comfort and convenience and remove distance as a barrier. Some clients combine both.

How do I start?

Simply send a message — tell me as much or as little as you like. I'll come back to you personally, usually within one to two working days, and we can take it from there.
